Homework and Spelling List ~ Week of August 24, 2009
Below you will find our homework schedule for next week along with our spelling list. I ask that you please study the spelling words with your child each night. Ask them if they would like to "buddy study" with you .... they will know exactly what I am talking about!
In math this month, we will be working on all concepts of time. Please encourage your child to tell time on a daily basis. You could ask them in the car - or in the grocery store - wherever there is a clock present! This will help a great deal - and it will help them relate these concepts to everyday life!
I would like to thank all of our parents for your outpouring support this week. Everyone has come to school with folders signed!! WHOOHOOO!!
Please make sure that your child completes his/her homework each and every night!! This is a vital part of our school day and curriculum!!
Thanks,
Mrs. Pilkington

Welcome to 4th Grade
Dear Parents,
I am delighted to have your child in my class this year!! 4th grade will be a year filled with many learning and life experiences. I am honored to be a part of your child’s life during this most important time. We have many fun and exciting things planned that will enhance your child’s 4th grade experience.
This year, I am super excited to announce that we will have a UALR intern in our classroom with us until March. Please welcome Mrs. Becky Smith to our classroom!
Each day your child will come home with a RED Mabelvale Mustang folder. There will be a Daily Behavior Sheet along with homework in this each night. I ask that you please review this with your child each night – initial and return. This will keep communication open between all three of us – parent, child, and teacher! In the case that your child forgets this folder I have developed a blog site that will be updated daily/weekly to keep parents informed about classroom needs & activities. Homework will also be posted along with a Spelling List in case your child forgets them at school.
www.pilkingtons4thgrade.blogspot.com
In 4th grade, our behavior plan consists of a positive reward plan the “ticket system”. Each week your child will need to earn 10 tickets in order to receive the ultimate prize of “Fun Friday” at the end of the week. During “Fun Friday” students will have extra time to plan educational games and have free time. This system works very well with my students & students respond wonderfully! The ultimate goal is for students to earn at least 2 tickets each day. Tickets may be removed for inappropriate behavior but can be replaced for corrected actions. This enables the child to correct mistakes made and build on positive reinforcement.
I am very excited about meeting each and every one of you this year. I am available through email and voicemail – so please don’t hesitate to contact me. My email address is: jessica.pilkington@lrsd.org and my direct classroom phone number is : 447-5439.
Here’s to a very successful year!!
Mrs. Jessica Pilkington

Testing Begins this Week!
Please be reminded that ACTAAP testing will begin this week. 4th grade will test Tuesday through Friday. It is VERY important that your child is on time to school each day so that they will be able to test in their familiar enviornment. I ask that you please take a look at the helpful hints below so that you will be "in the know" about what our week will look like!
Also, we will not have any homework this week ONLY! The students will be testing for the majority of each morning. However, please look for Behavior Reports for ticket totals on student behavior!
Testing Tips for Success
1. Encourage your child to do his or her best on the test.
2. Realize that putting too much pressure on your child about testing may cause test anxiety.
3. Talk to your child about how he or she feels about taking the test. Allow them to express their concerns.
4. Ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast each morning of testing.
5. Reassure your child that test scores are just one way to measure their ability.
6. Express a positive attitude to your child.
7. Please MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD IS ON TIME EACH DAY!!!!!!!!
If you have any questions about the testing process, please call me directly at 447-5439, leave a message and I will call you back!
